Introducing New Concepts

Montessori teachers use the term three-period lesson often. The three-period lesson is a fundamental approach to introducing new concepts (not just vocabulary) to children. It is used to help the child move from basic understanding to mastery.

Period 1 – Introduction (“This is…..”)

Period 2 – ¬†Association (“Show me…”)

Period 3 – ¬†Recall (“What is this?”)

Every time a child masters a skill or idea, they become more competent and independent and wish to learn more.
